Instructor Dr. Amy Hunt and student Ramsey Sellers were selected to represent Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College at the 24th annual Higher Education Appreciation Day-Working for Academic Excellence (HEADWAE) program in Jackson on February 26. The day’s activities included an awards luncheon and visit to the state Capitol.

Hunt, chair of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department at the Jackson County Campus, is from Ocean Springs and has worked at MGCCC for 11 years. She received her bachelor’s degree from The University of Southern Mississippi, her master’s degree from The University of Memphis and her doctorate in health promotion and education from Walden University. She is a member of Action for Healthy Kids; Mississippi Alliance for Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; American College of Sports Medicine; and the Association for Worksite Health Promotion. She is a member of USA Triathlon and Gulf Coast Running clubs and enjoys the competition of participating in both triathlons and marathons.

Sellers, of Wiggins, graduated with honors from MGCCC’s Perkinston Campus in December.  He is currently a junior in Civil Engineering at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida, where he has a football scholarship.  Sellers was a team captain and offensive lineman during the 2012 season at MGCCC and was one of seven MGCCC players selected to participate in the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-Star Football Classic.  The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) also chose him as an Athlete of Distinction for maintaining a 3.78 grade point average during the 2011-12 school year.

Each February the state Legislature and the Mississippi Association of Colleges recognize an outstanding faculty member and student from each of the state’s community colleges and universities during the HEADWAE program.
