MGCCC pitcher Reina Baluja looks on as Lea Kittrell fields a grounder against Jones on March 24.

Lea Kittrell’s grand slam highlighted a game-one win and propelled Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to a road sweep at Southwest on March 26.

The Lady Bulldogs (21-5, 11-1) were down 1-0 in game one but scored three in the fifth and four in the seventh to put away Southwest 7-1. Kittrell’s second homer of 2013 led a seven hit attack by MGCCC. Ashley Hickman and Brooke Gaston each had two hits, while Reina Baluja (11-4) gave up one run on three hits along with six strikeouts for the pitching victory.

In a 5-1 game-two win, Baluja smacked a two-run homer, her fourth this season, and Ashley Hickman rapped a two-run double to pace the Lady Bulldogs offense. Pitcher Hallie Frenn scattered six hits and gave up one run for the win.

On March 24, the Lady Bulldogs had an 11-game win streak snapped but they bounced back to split an MACJC South Division doubleheader with Jones.

Game one was a pitcher’s duel between Samantha Buller of Jones and Reina Baluja, with the lone run of the game coming from Mackenzie Hawkins of the Lady Bobcats in the top of the second inning.

The Lady Bulldogs (20-5, 9-1) responded in game two with 10 hits and a five-hit, six-strikeout shutout from pitcher Hallie Frenn. Morgan Fairley, Emily Davis and Ashley Hickman each had two hits, with Davis and Brianna Farr each picking up two RBIs.

The Lady Bulldogs have now won 14 out of their last 15 games and get an 11-day break before hosting Hinds on Saturday, April 6.
