MGCCC’S Stuart Holmes tossed a complete game shutout against Co-Lin on April 2.

Stuart Holmes tosses a complete-game shutout while his teammates committed no errors in two games as Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College pulled off a 3-2, 1-0 doubleheader sweep of Co-Lin on April 2 at Perkinston.

It’s the first MACJC South Division sweep of a twinbill this season for the Bulldogs (19-13, 6-6).

Freshman starter Taylor Olsen (4-1) went five strong innings in game one to earn the victory while Jordan Mata notched his third save of the season. The Gulf Coast was provided by Kyle Clement’s three-run homerun in the bottom of the third inning, his fourth homer of the year.

In game two Holmes (4-3) went seven innings and allowed no runs on three hits along with seven strikeouts while Garrett Odom’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the game winning run.

“We talked about playing our game today,” said Gulf Coast head coach Gary Rath. “We feel like we’ve given some games away in the past, but today our pitching and defense was stellar.”

On March 29, in Decatur, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College was three outs away from a doubleheader sweep over East Central, but the Warriors came from behind to take game two and force a split.

The Bulldogs (17-13, 4-6) won game one 8-3 behind a three-run homerun from Garrett Odom and a solo shot from Jarred Gates. Chris Burdette had three hits while Kyle Clement had two doubles and two RBI. Ryne Long also had two hits and two RBI. Pitcher Cam Cochran went six-and-one-third innings to improve his season record to 6-1.

In the nightcap, Gulf Coast and East Central went to extra innings tied at 2 before the Bulldogs scratched a run across in the top of the ninth. East Central answered with a two-run triple for the 4-3, come-from-behind win. Michael Gilbert had two hits at the plate while pitchers Tyler Quave, Taylor Olsen, and Jordan Mata combined to give up only two earned runs.

Gulf Coast travels to Jackson Friday, April 5, for a doubleheader with Miss. Delta.
