Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s George County Center hosted a Back to School/SkillsUSA cookout on Sept. 9, in the center’s courtyard.  Andy Sims, Mississippi director of SkillsUSA, and Elizabeth Broderick, 11-place winner at nationals/first-place winner at state in 2013 SkillsUSA competitions, spoke to the 33 students attending the event.

Sims told the cosmetology and welding students about the SkillsUSA organization at the state and national levels, the benefits of being a member of SkillsUSA, and why they should compete at both the state and national levels.

Broderick, a student at the George County Center, talked about the importance of career and technical programs and how winning at state and national competitions helped her.

Students also voted for chapter officers during the event.  Officers are Nicole Bell, cosmetology, president; Will Strickland, welding, vice president; Adam Crocker, welding, treasurer; Shanteria Bracks, cosmetology, secretary; Daniel Harrison, welding, reporter; and Olivia Goff, welding, parliamentarian.
