Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jackson County Campus will host “The Practice of Daydreaming,” an art exhibit by alumna Kelsy Wishik, from Nov. 14-Dec. 19 at the campus Fine Arts Gallery. A reception was held on Nov. 14.
The show features Wishik’s 3-D work, which grows out of an almost childlike imagination. “Much of my work tends to assume the forms of playful explorative vehicles that invite creative interaction,” she said. “That being said, it is also my joy and duty as the maker, to BE the vehicle of exploration and innovation. Thus, I allow my work to change as I actively seek to define my experiences through form. During the creative process, each individual piece has a narrative that usually directly corresponds with an experience that I am having. They are often initiated from daydreams and poems, but once the piece is completed, I am, inevitably, left asking new questions and filled with fresh curiosity and wonderment.”
While a student at the Jackson County Campus, Wishik was awarded “Best in Show” in the 2010 Mississippi Community/Junior College Art Instructors Association, where she competed against students from the state’s 14 community and junior colleges.
“Kelsey is a great example of what we as instructors strive to accomplish – recognizing and nurturing talent and providing a foundation for future artistic growth and success,” said Marc Poole, art instructor at the Jackson County Campus. “This is a wonderful opportunity to show our current students what is possible for them at the next level, and hopefully, will serve as an inspiration to them.”
Wishik is now a senior studying sculpture at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
