For the first time since 2010, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is ranked No. 1 in theNJCAA football poll. The Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0) 41-28 win over then No. 6 ranked Hinds Sept. 13 propelled the team to the top spot in the first week that the Football Computer Rankings (FCR) system has been implemented. The FCR is worth 33% of the poll with the other 67% coming from the human voters. The FCR is calculated with the following values: Winning Percentage (50%), Opponents winning percentage (25%), and Opponents-Opponents winning percentage (25%).
“It’s great to be number one, but the main goal is to be in that spot at the end of the season,” said Gulf Coast head coach Steve Campbell. “Right now our main focus is Jones this Saturday. None of the rankings matter if we don’t take care of business on the field.”
East Mississippi, the defending NJCAA National Champions, were ranked No. 1 but fell to No. 4 in the FCR since the combined records of their first three opponents is 1-7. Iowa Western comes in at No. 2, Butler is at No. 3, and Arizona Western is No. 5.
The Bulldogs have also been ranked in the NJCAA poll for a record-setting 93 straight weeks dating all the way back to the 2005 season.
Gulf Coast travels to Jones (2-1, 1-0) Saturday for another key MACJC South Division showdown. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Ellisville.
