BAY MINETTE, AL—The Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College tennis team continues to improve during the fall season after a win at Faulkner State on October 23.
The Bulldog men took care of Faulkner 7-2, with Alex Puyol and Sean Robinson leading the charge. Puyol defeated Faulkner State’s Tyler Watts 6-0, 6-1, while Robinson put away Ian Thomas 6-0, 6-1. Puyol and Robinson teamed up in No. one doubles to shut out Watts/Martin 8-0.
Also winning in men’s singles for Gulf Coast were Nick Georgian, who blanked Andrew Breyer 6-0, 6-0, and Travis Burdick, who beat Martin Bryant 6-4, 6-0.
Winning in doubles for Gulf Coast were Georgian/L. Puyol over Byner/Breley 8-4, and Burdick/Grant Bell, who put down McIntosch/Bryant 8-0.
“Our freshman are really growing up fast and are playing some inspired tennis,” said Gulf Coast tennis coach Gary Bourgeois. “They’re really working hard to improve their tennis knowledge.”
The women’s team slipped by Faulkner 5-4, with Kit Chowdhary, Brittany Buker and Aliesha Barlow setting the pace. Buker defeated Tynisha Newcheck 6-0, 6-1, while Chowdhary got past Daniela Clark 6-3, 6-1. Also winning in singles for Gulf Coast were Diamond Short and Aliesha Barlow. The doubles victory went to Buker/Chowdhary, who outlasted Ekland/Hathorn 8-4.
“Faulkner is a very tough opponent, and we had some really good battles with them,” Bourgeois added. “I’m especially proud of our women’s squad, which was down two courts to love but came back and pulled out the win.”
Gulf Coast takes has a rematch with Faulkner Nov. 9.
