Daniel Vernon and Dr. Joanna Burnside, music faculty at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Perkinston Campus, will be giving a vocal and piano recital at the Perkinston Campus on Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in Malone Auditorium. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.
Vernon and Burnside performed in the New Faculty Recital at the Mississippi Music Teachers Association (MMTA) on Nov. 1 and again at a Gulf Coast Music Teachers Association (GCMTA) workshop on Nov. 9. They presented vocal/piano works by Maurice Ravel, Charles-Francois Gounod and Renaldo Hahn.
During the workshop, Vernon spoke with the teachers, parents and students about the benefits of a community college education and ways music students can prepare for college. MGCCC student Lauren Wise also spoke to the group about her experiences at the college and performed a vocal selection by Hugo Wolf.
On Nov. 7, Vernon led a reading session for choir directors at the Mississippi Music Educators Association (MMEA) district workshop, with Burnside assisting at the piano. Burnside also accompanied a reading session presented by Joel Dunlap, director of choral activities at Long Beach High School.
